Are you excited to meet the challenges of each new day?
When I was a new worker, I often complained to Mom and Dad that I had the worse boss, the job was for morons and I needed to look elsewhere or go crazy.
Maybe you were lucky enough to have a Dad like mine. He sat
me down and suggested I get over myself. That every job I
would ever have would always be a pain in some form or the other.
If someone else was going to supply my paycheck then I better
get a grip. My job was to get the job done I was hired for. My
personal opinion could get me fired so find something about
that job that made it exciting, or at least something I could
learn from that would do me good in the job life I was yet to
How are your working hours spent?
Day jobs often hold the water cooler culture. Where
face-to-face you can talk to a real person. Is it a whine and
cheese party or a productive sharing of ideas to get the work
done? Sometimes more is accomplished in ad-hoc meetings
creating the kind of interaction that calls for less and less
The idea there is what did you learn and how did you learn it?
Can you apply that sort of sharing and excitement in online
Technologies Weapons of Mass Destruction
The door to your office. The telephone, cell phone or any other
mode of interruption that can take your attention away from
the reason for the meeting. The needs of young children or
animals that love to sit on your lap or the keyboard.
Participation becomes a nightmare. Make sure when it is
meeting time, you have these ‘weapons’ under control. Get the
help of your significant other or older sibling to watch the
young ones and advise only if they cannot handle a situation.
Put the phone on messages only. Leave your cell phone
OUTSIDE the office. No one is dying to speak to you right
Provide a bottle of water, a coffee or tea, and a plate of your
favorite biscuits. Sometimes the child within responds better
to a little treat when all the normal noises and distractions are
removed. We are creatures of habit so nurture your inner self
during these times.
Avoid technology blunders.
If you are leading a meeting then make double sure all tools are
in working order. The room access; overheads, whiteboards,
etc. Do sound checks every once in a while. Have a file with
necessary notes and links ready for a copy and paste.
Nothing turns your person off faster than not being prepared
and wasting 20 minutes of value time doing what should have
been done before the meeting.
Do you go to a meeting where everyone is so social you know
you will have a blast laughing and enjoying repartee? Or do
you go to a meeting where you can inject some of that social
fun yet share what needs to be done, get your opinion on board
and come away feeling satisfied you have learned something?
Time does fly when you are having fun. However, the level of
that fun often needs tempering or separating depending on the
reason for calling on your time. Sometimes a little fun is called
for so injecting that moment of relief can be good for all.
It’s a new day! Are you ready to go take on new challenges?
